This book provides an excellent history of visual culture and graphic design and I would recommend anyone to begin to get a grip on how things have evolved to the current situation in design. My only criticism is that the book seems very often for academic purposes with its sections has worked for the beginning of the design. I wanted the book was focused more on the contemporary scene, but again, it is almost essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history of visual culture.

This book is a valuable contribution to the field of Graphic Design History. Until recently, the study design lacked the kind of critical analysis that art historians have always provided to painting or sculpture. Drucker and McVarish do an excellent job of involving the reader in their thought processes. Some pages are the best mash-up of colorful graphics and interfered with the various comments and questions. For example, two pages in Chinese writing Oracle, Sumerian cuneiform, and Mayan Code is divided into two by a horizontal band in red text to ask: What is the written equivalent of an ironic inflection? What is the spoken equivalent of a sans serif face? I had the opportunity to see the text of this book before its publication. The design is beautiful book. One could argue with some inclusions or omitted, but overall, this book is extraordinary. The writers made me think again about the impact and importance of graphic design. I teach a course on the history of graphic design, and I found very fascinating.
